Voisey’s Bay Mine in Labrador, Canada, posed unique challenges for drilling operations due to its demanding and complex environment. Partnering with Vale in June 2019, Master Drilling was tasked with delivering extensive raises and paste holes while adhering to strict safety standards. The mine’s harsh conditions, coupled with the operational constraints of a busy site, required a precise, resilient and adaptable approach. Successfully completing this ambitious project meant overcoming logistical complexities, maintaining rigorous safety protocols and ensuring seamless integration with existing mining operations.
Master Drilling rose to the challenge through innovation, teamwork and a steadfast commitment to safety. The project utilised cutting-edge drilling technology, comprehensive planning and highly skilled personnel. Over 329,340 man-hours were dedicated to the project, which included 2,800 meters of piloting, 2,319 meters of reaming, 20 raises and 2 paste holes. A culture of collaboration and rigorous training ensured safety and operational efficiency, while meticulous scheduling and resource allocation addressed the logistical complexities of working in such an environment. These measures underscored Master Drilling’s ability to deliver exceptional results under challenging conditions.
The Voisey’s Bay Mine project concluded with outstanding success, reaffirming Master Drilling’s reputation for reliability and excellence. The team achieved 1,877 days without a lost time injury (LTI), highlighting their exceptional safety record. All operational goals were met with precision, including the successful completion of extensive drilling milestones. The project strengthened the partnership with Vale, demonstrating Master Drilling’s capability to deliver world-class solutions in the most challenging environments.
